Der Pharos liegt innerhalb der Mauern von Dover Castle. "Pharos" war ursprünglich der Name einer Insel im Hafen von Alexandria, wo im dritten Jhdt. vor Christus der berühmteste Leuchttturm des Altertums gebaut wurde, ebenfalls "Pharos" genannt. Er galt als eines der sieben Weltwunder. Der Pharos in der Burg zu Dover war etwa 24 Meter hoch, als er im Jahre 43 gebaut wurde. Er bestand in der Hauptsache aus Feuersteinbruch, der durch Ziegellagen gefestigt und mit Kalktuffquadern verkleidet war. Der oberste Teil ist eine Rekonstruktion des 15. Jhdts. Die direkt daneben liegende Kirche Mary-in-Castro ist vermutlich die älteste Kirche Englands und wurde von den Sachsen errichtet.
"Pharos" was, originally, the name of an island in the harbour of Alexandria where, in the third century BC, the most famous lighthouse in antiquity was built, which was also called "Pharos". It was regarded as one of the "Seven Wonders of the World". The Pharos in Dover Castle stood about 80 feet when it was built in 43 AD. It was mainly of flint rubble with bonding courses of tiles and was faced with tufa ashlar. The top is a fifteenth-century reconstruction. The Mary-in-Castro church next to it is possibly the oldest one in England and was built by the Saxons.
