Lydford Castle wurde vermutlich um 1195 als Gefängnis erbaut in Form eines freistehenden Turmes mit mindestens zwei Stockwerken. Im 13. Jahrhundert erfolgte ein kompletter Umbau. Ein Graben wurde um das Gebäude herum angelegt, der Erdboden bis zum Erdgeschoss angehäuft und die oberen Etagen wurden als Turmbau neu angelegt.
Lydford Castle was probably built about 1195 to serve as a prison in form of a freestanding tower of at least two storeys. In the 13. century a thorough rebuilding was undertaken. A ditch was dug around the tower and the soil piled up against the ground floor. The upper storeys were completely rebuilt to form a small keep.
